A
reflection on the Gospel for
Pentecost Sunday
|
|
Observe the diversity of
faces you see on the bus or
train. Listen to the many
languages spoken. There are
languages with such different
sounds it seems almost impossible
our throats could make such
sounds that are odd to our ears.
The funny thing is that to other
people, the sounds we make are
odd to them. Just as a diversity
of races and languages exist,
there is also diversity in foods,
music, ways of thinking and
organizing, and diverse cultures.
The unknown can often produce
fear. Sometimes we imagine things
about other groups, which may be
true about a person in the group,
but cannot be generalized about
everyone. We think everything
about us is normal and good,
while everything else is strange
and even inadequate. Although
these fears and prejudices exist
only in our thoughts, they become
deeper. We begin to point out the
differences among groups. It
seems as if, little by little, we
build invisible walls that are so
real they prevent us from getting
close to others. The division
exist even within our own
communities.

Una
reflexión sobre el
Evangelio del Domingo
Pentecostés
|
|
Fíjense un
día en el autobús o
el tren en los distintos rostros.
Escuchen las diversas lenguas que
se hablan. Hay personas de todas
las razas y colores. Hay lenguas
con sonido tan distinto que nos
parece casi imposible colocar la
garganta de manera que pueda
emitir esos sonidos tan raros a
nuestros oídos. Lo
gracioso es que, a otras
personas, también nuestros
sonidos les parecen raros.
Así como hay diversidad de
razas y lenguas, hay diversidad
de comidas, músicas,
maneras de pensar y organizarse.
Diversas culturas. Lo desconocido
podría producirnos un poco
de temor. A veces imaginamos
cosas de los otros grupos que
quizá sean verdad de
alguna persona de ese grupo, pero
que no se deberían
generalizar a todos. Nos parece
que lo nuestro es normal y bueno
y que lo de los demás es
extraño o incluso
inadecuado. Pero, aunque esos
temores y prejuicios estén
sólo en nuestro
pensamiento, se nos van
ahondando. Luego pasamos a hacer
diferencias entre los grupos. Es
como si poco a poco,
construyéramos muros
invisibles pero tan reales que
nos impiden acercarnos unos a
otros. Incluso en nuestras
propias comunidades existe a
veces la division.

HOW DID YOU HEAR
THE GOOD NEWS
TODAY?
The May 17-18
special collection
supports the CATHOLIC
COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN,
which for more than 25
years has been spreading
the Gospel message
locally and nationally
on radio, television, in
print, and on the
Internet. It is only
through donations from
Catholic parishioners
that this is possible.

of the collection will
remain in our
archdiocese to fund
local Catholic
communication efforts.
