A
reflection on
the Gospel for
The Twenty
First Sunday in
Ordinary
Time
|
|
It seems
we like to hear
what others
think about
us...especially
if it happens
to be good. We
like to be
portrayed as
having a good
image. Could
this be the
reason Jesus
asks his
friends what
others were
saying about
who he was? In
some way, yes
and also
becuase he
wanted it to be
part of a
greater lesson.
By saying what
they thought of
Jesus, they
were not only
verbalizing
their faith or
confronting it
for the first
time; they were
also realinzing
who they were.
By stating that
Jesus is the
son of living
God, it is
reverberated;
if Jesus is the
Son of God,
then we must
also be
children of
God. This
revelation is a
gift and a
source of great
joy. By
proclaiming who
Jesus is, we
affirm the gift
of God in our
lives. We
affirm that
through Jesus
we are made
children of
God. Now no
matter what is
said about
Jesus, no
matter what is
said about us,
we know the
absolute and
greatest truth:
we are the
beloved
children of
God, therefore,
we posses
immense
dignity. It is
a dignity that
forces us to
fight for those
who, like us,
are the
children of God
and as a result
filled with
dignity and
rights. It is
dignity that
demands us to
fight for
justice
regardless of
where we may
find ourselves.
That is, it
obligates us to
fight for the
rights of
immigrants, for
the right to
fair housing,
and for a
quality
education. We
must also fight
for fairness in
lur homes, in
our
relationships
with one
another in the
family and in
our place of
work.

Una
reflexión
sobre el
evangelio del
Vigesimo
Primero Domingo
del Tiempo
Ordinario
|
|
Siempre
nos gusta que
nos digan lo
que piensa de
nosotros...sobre
todo si es
bueno. Nos
encanta que nos
reflejen con
una buena
imagen.
¿Sería
por eso que
Jesus pregunta
a sus amigos
quién
dicen que es
él?
Posiblemente en
parte
sí. Y
también
posiblemente lo
hiciera como
parte de una
lección.
Al decirle
quién
piensa que es,
nos sólo
verbalizan su
fe, o se
enfrentan a
ella por
primera vez,
sino que
también
se dan cuenta
de
quiénes
son ellos
mismos. Al
decir que
Jesús,
afirmamos el
don de Dios, se
hace como un
eco. Si
Jesús es
el Hijo de Dios
vivo, nosotros
tenemos que ser
también
hijos de Dios.
Esta
revelación
es una gracia y
una enorme
alegría.
Al proclamar
quién es
Jesús,
afirmamos el
don de Dios en
nuestras vidas.
Afirmamos que
por
Jesús,
somos hechos
hijos de Dios.
Y ahora digan
lo que digan de
nosotros,
sabemos la
verdad
más
absoluta y
mejor: somos
amados hijos de
Dios, y por lo
tanto, tenmos
una inmensa
dignidad. Es
una dignidad
que nos obliga
a luchar por
todos
aquéllos
que
también,
como nosotros,
son hijos de
Dios y por lo
tanto llenos de
dignidad y
derecho. Es una
dignidad que
nos obliga a
luchar por la
justicia sea
donde sea que
nos
encontremos. Es
decir, nos
obliga a luchar
por los
derechos de los
inmigrantes,
por el derecho
a una vivienda
justa y una
educación
de calidad.
Pero
también
a buscar un
trato justo en
nuestra casa,
en nuestras
relaciones de
unos con otros
en familia y en
eltrabajo.

We meet many people throughout our lives
and some of these, after some time, become
our friends and even spend with them, the
more we get to know them and we deepen the
friendship and love that unites us. But if
someone who does not know our best friend
or spouse asks us to describe either one
for him or her, could we do it? We could
obiously describe his or her physical
appearance, line of work, the way he or
she dresses but we could not exactly
convey who that other person truly is. We
need to have a personal relationship, a
human bond, a heart to heart connection if
we are to know who someone really is. When
Jesus asks his disciples who do they think
he is, only Petermaking himself the
spokeperson of the othersanswers
correctly. Jesus and his apostles know
each other well because they are united by
their faith in a God who does not abandon
his people. It is also because they have
faith that other characters from the
Gospels also recognize that Jesus is the
Son of God. Our faith must be lived out by
loving and giving ourselves to others. The
apostles, following Jesus who died because
of love, dedicated their lives to proclaim
the reign of God and serve those in need.
It is not an easy task, even Peter denied
knowing Jesus, but it is not an impossible
one. The faith that we have received as a
gift from God sustains us at difficult
times and it overcomes the hardest
obstacles, even death
itself.
Al
largo de nuestras vidas conocemos a muchas
personas y algunas de estas se convierten
en amigos de muchos años o incluso
en nuestras esposas o esposos. Cuanto
más tiempo pasamos con ellos,
más sabemos de ellos y
profundizamos la amistad y el amor que nos
unen. Pero si alguien que no conoce a
nuestro mejor amigo o a nuestro
cónyuge nos pide que se lo
describamos, ¿seríamos capaces
de hacerlo? Obviamente podemos detallar su
aspecto físico, gustos, trabajo,
forma de vestir. . . pero no
podríamos comunicar exactamente y
en su totalidad quien es de verdad. Hace
Pedro negó conocer a Jesús,
pero no es imposible. La fe que recibimos
como don de Dios nos sostiene en los
momentos difíciles y vence los
obstáculos más duros,
incluso la muerte.
