A
reflection on
the Gospel for
All Souls
Day

Priests
Of the ten
virgins in
charge of
keeping the
lamps burning
as they expect
the bridegroom,
five were
prudent enough
to have what
they needed for
the wait. They
had enough oil
as to be able
to light their
lamps. Thus
they would be
ready, even if
the bridegroom
came after
midnight. The
other five did
not think, did
not care. And
the coming of
the bridegroom
caught them by
surprise. They
were left out
of the party.
Light was
inside,
darkness
outside. The
five imprudent
women were
enveloped in
the darkness
outside. The
five imprudent
women were
enveloped in
the darkness of
night. There
are people who
always leave
for tomorrow
what they could
do today, just
the opposite of
the proverb:
“Don’t
leave until
tomorrow what
you can do
today.”
They are people
who are all to
sure that they
will have
tomorrow to be
reconciled with
a brother, to
visit a sick
friend, return
what they
stole, give up
drinking, start
being honest at
work, or start
paying
attention to
their children.
They forget
that tomorrow
is precisely
what we cannot
be sure of.
What is sure is
the present,
right now.
Wouldn’t
it be better to
start doing the
right things
today? So, in
case tomorrow
does not come,
at least we
will be
reconciled,
have a happier
life, love
better those
who are near
us, be more
honest. At
least we could
tell the Lord
that perhaps we
did not finish
our task, but
it was not
because we did
not start, but
because we did
not have enough
time. This is
what Jesus asks
of us: to be
attentive,
aware of our
lives, to do
what we need to
do so that,
when the moment
arrives to give
an account we
won’t find
ourselves
without oil in
our lamps and
empty
handed.

sobre el
evangelio del

Los De
las diez
vírgenes
encargadas de
mantener las
lámparas
encendidas para
esperar al
novio, cinco
fueron lo
suficientemente
prudentes como
para disponer
lo que
necesitaban
para la espera.
Tomaron consigo
suficiente
aceite como
para poder
encender sus
lámparas.
Así
estarían
dispuestas
aunque el novio
llegase a la
medianoche. Las
otras cinco no
pensaron, no se
preocuparon. Y
la llegada del
novio les
pilló
desprevenidas.
Se quedaron
fuera de la
fiesta. Dentro
estaba la luz,
fuera la
oscuridad. Las
cinco
vígenes
necias quedaron
envueltas en la
oscuridad de la
noche. Hay
personas que
dejan siempre
para
mañana
lo que pueden
hacer hoy.
Exactamente lo
contrario de lo
que dice el
refrán:
“No dejes
para
mañana
lo que puedas
hacer
hoy”. Son
personas que
están
muy seguras de
que van a
disponer de
mañana
para
reconciliarse
con su hermano,
visitar a aquel
amigo enfermo,
devolver lo que
robaron, dejar
de beber,
comenzar a
preocuparse de
sus hijos. Se
olvidan de que
el
mañana
es aquello de
lo que
ciertamente no
estamos
seguros. Lo que
tenemos como
seguro es el
ahora, el
presente. Nada
más.
¿No
será
mejor comenzar
a hacer hoy
todas esas
cosas?
Así, en
caso de que no
dispongamos de
mañana,
al menos
habremos
comenzado a
reconciliarnos,
a vivir una
vida más
feliz, a amar
más a
los que viven
con nosotros, a
ser más
honrados. Al
menos, le
podremos decir
al Señor
que
quizá no
terminamos de
hacer todo lo
que
teníamos
que hacer pero
no fue porque
no
empezámos
sino porque nos
faltó
tiempo. Eso es
lo que nos pide
Jesús:
que estemos
atentos,
despiertos a
nuestra vida,
que hagamos lo
que hacer para
que cuando
llegue el
momento de dar
cuentas no nos
encontremos sin
aciete en las
lámparas
y con las manos
vacías.

The Feast
of All Souls
The
practice of keeping a memorial day for the
dead did not begin with Christianity; such
a commemoration was prevalent in pagan
aniquity. But as early as the second
century, Christians commemorated the
anniversary of the dead, especially the
day of the death of the martyrs. The
liturgical observance of a single day for
the dead dates to the seventh century. The
monks of Cluny set the date as November 2,
the day following the Feast of All Saints,
and in the fourteenth century Rome
accepted this practice. The tone of
today’s celebration is a paschal one,
because Christ’s Paschal Mystery
gives meaning to the death of the faithful
Christian. Belief in the resurrection of
Jesus and belief in our own resurrection
should convince us to take life seriously.
Death is not something that we as
Christian face with fear; it is not a
threat to existence. If we understand it
as the necessary prelude to resurrection,
then it will help us to determine how to
live. We will then look upon our time in
our mortal life as a series of
opportunities for believing, hoping,
loving and growing. Like yesterday’s
feast of All Saints, it is feast of
God’s triumph. It is a celebration of
the victory of Jesus over death, and a
promise that we will one day enjoy the
vision of God’s glory in the Kingdom
where hope is firm for all who love, and
rest is sure for all who serve.

práctica de guardar un día
en memoria de todos los muertos no
comenzó con el Cristianismo; esta
conmemoración ya existía en
la antiguedad pagana. Pero a comienzos del
siglo segundo, los Cristianos conmemoraban
el aniversario de los muertos,
especialmente el día de la muerte
de los mártires. La costumbre
litúrgica de observar un día
en particular para los muertos data del
siglo séptimo. Los monjes de Cluny
fijaron la fecha para el 2 de Noviembre,
el día después de la Fiesta
de Todos los Santos, y en el siglo catorce
Roma aceptó esta práctica.
El tono de la celebración actual es
pascual, porque el Misterio Pascual de
Cristo le da significado a la muerte de
los fieles Cristianos. La creencia en la
resurrección de Jesús y la
creencia en nuestra propia
resurrección debería
convecernos de tomar la vida en serio. La
muerte no debe ser algo que nosotros los

nuestra vida mortal como una serie de
oportunidades para creer, esperar, amar y
crecer. Como la fiesta de ayer de Todos
los Santos, también es una fiesta
del triunfo de Dios. Es una
celebración de la victoria de
Jesús sobre la muerte, y una
promesa de que un día gozaremos
viendo la gloria de Dios en el Reino donde
la esperanza es firme para todos los que
aman, y el descanso esseguro para todos
los que sirven.
