A
reflection on
the Gospel for
the Second
Sunday in
Advent
|
|
Some of
us have
journeyed
through the
desert to reach
this country.
Others,
although we
have not
journeyed
physically,
know what it is
to feel the
pain, aridness,
and solitude of
a desert, and
to feel the
sensation that
a situation is
never going to
end. Sometimes
it feels if
this desert is
endless because
we fail to see
in the horizon
the solution to
our pain and
problems. But
today we are
given the good
news that even
when we find
ourselves in
what may seem
to be an
endless desert
without solace,
we receive word
that the Lord
will come as a
shepherd to
guide his flock
and carry them
on his
shoulders. The
Lord will come
in all his
glory and as we
are told in
todays
second reading
there is no
distinctions in
time for God,
but he concedes
us the space to
prepare for his
arrival. We are
told that there
is an end to
our pain,
because the
Lord Jesus is
coming, to
conquer all
evil and death.
There is much
to do on our
part. We cannot
remain inactive
thinking there
is nothing we
can do, that
the problems of
the world are
too much for
us, and even
our own
problems cannot
be solved. But
there is
something we
can do. As John
tells us, we
can prepare the
road to
Gods
victory can
arrive. How can
this be done?
Perhaps it
consists,
simply, in
making life
easier for
others. Not
placing
problems and
obstacles on
the dreams of
our children,
making our
daily life go
by as smoothly
as possible;
making
coexistence
with our family
more pleasant;
yielding many
times in our
positions and
in the ways of
seeing things;
not trying to
control
everything and
sacrificing
sometimes our
own comfort for
the well being
of others
around us. It
puts us in a
position to
take care of
and listen to
others, because
those simple
actions will
increase our
awareness to
recognize the
God who lives
among us, who
will come
during this
Advent, and it
will help us to
recuperate our
hope and joy.
Nothing is
invincible, not
even in the
desert because
God is
coming.

Una
reflexión
sobre el
evangelio del
Segundo domingo
de
Adviento
|
|
Algunos
de nosotros
hemos pasado un
desierto para
llegar a este
país.
Otros, aunque
ninca hayamos
estado en un
desierto
físico,
sabemos lo que
es sentir el
dolor, la
sequedad o la
soledad que se
parecen a un
disierto y
tener la
sensación
de que nunca se
va a acabar la
situación.
A veces nos
parece que el
desierto no
tiene fin,
porque no vemos
en el horizonte
ninguna
solución
a nuestro dolor
o a nuestros
problemas. Pero
hoy se nos da
una gran
noticia.
Aún
cuando nos
encontramos en
lo que nos
parece un
desierto sin
fin y sin
consuelo, se
nos anuncia que
vendrá
el Señor
como pastor
para guiar a
sus ovejas y
llevarlas sobre
sus hombros.
Que
vendrá
el Señor
con su gloria
porque, como
nos dice la
segunda lectura
de hoy, para
Dios no hay
tiempo, pero
nos concede un
espacio para
que nos
preparemos a su
venida. Se nos
anuncia que el
dolor tiene un
fin, porque
llega el
Señor
Jesús,
que
vencerá
al mal y a la
muerte. Por
nuestra parte,
hay mucho que
hacer. No
podemos
quedarnos
inactivos
pensando que no
hay nada que
hacer, que los
problemas del
mundo son
demasiado para
nosotros, y que
incluso
nuestros
propios
problemas son
insalvables.
Pero si que
podemos hacer
algo. Podemos,
de momento,
allanar el
camino para que
pueda llegar la
victoria de
Dios, como nos
dice Juan.
¿Cómo
se hace eso?
Quizá
consista,
sencillamente,
en hacerle la
vida un poco
más
sencilla a los
demás.
No poniendo
problemas u
obstáculos
a los
sueños
de nuestros
hijos,
suavizando la
vida diaria en
los que
podamos,
haciendo la
convivencia
más
agradable para
nuestra
familia;
cediendo muchas
veces en
nuestras
propias
posturas y
maneras de ver
las cosas, no
intentando
controlarlo
todo,
sacrificando
algunas veces
nuestra propia
comodidad a
favor de
algún
bien que le
pueda venir a
las personas de
nuestro
alrededor. Asi
estaremos en
posición
de atender y
escuchar,
porque esas
sencillas
acciones
aumentarán
nuestra
sensibilidad
para reconocer
al Dios que
está
entre nosotros
y que viene en
este Adviento.
Y eso nos
hará
recuperar
nuestra
esperanza y
alegría.
Nada es
invencible, ni
siquiera el
desierto,
porque Dios ya
viene

It is past midnight and the children have
not been able to fall asleep yet. That
night they barely ate dinner and quickly
headed to their bedrooms. They speak to
each other quietly so as not to wake their
parents. They are anxious and cannot wait
for the morning to come when they will see
the presents Santa Claus has brought them.
It is the expectation of a great day about
which they have been thinking for weeks,
if not months. That is the invitation
offered to us in todays readings: to
anxiously wait, well prepared, for the
coming of Jesus. Because when the Lord
comes, everything will radically change.
These changes will be so spectacular that
the deserts will become meadows and the
valleys will become mountains. And when
Jesus arrives in our lives and
communities, the changes will be so
extraordinary that our hate will turn into
love, our injustices into acts of justice,
and our divided cities will be united
communities. Such are the changes, the
conversions, that Jesus Christ brings when
he dwells in our hearts. We must prepare
for the coming of the Lord, just as the
prophets Isaiah and John tell us. In our
case not only with ornaments and Christmas
shopping, but with open hearts and desire
for conversion. Lets compare the
hours that, on the one hand, we spent
looking at shops, searching for presents
and wrapping gifts and, on the other hand,
the hours or maybe just minutes that we
dedicate to prayer, community and the
examination of our lives.
Es pasada la medianoche y los niños
todavía no pueden dormir. Esa noche
enteras, si no meses. Esa es la
invitación que nos hacen las
lecturas de hoy: la de esperar
ansiosamente, y preparados, la llegada de
Jesús. Porque cuando llegue el
Señor, las cosas cambiarán
radicamente. Los cambios serán tan
espectaculares que los desiertos se
convertirán en praderas y los
valles en montañas. Y cuando
Jesús llegue a nuestras vidas y
nuestras comunidades, los cambios
serán tan extraordinarios que
nuestro odio se convertirá en amor,
y nuestros injusticias en actos de
justicia, y nuestras ciudades divididas en
comunidades unidas.
vidas.
