A
reflection on
the Gospel for
the Third
Sunday in
Advent
|
|
Maybe it
doesn’t
occur
frequently, but
there are times
when things
turn out so
well for us
that we may
even believe we
are powerful or
important. But
then, if we
only rely on
our own
strength, we
can become
frustrated when
things
don’t turn
out as well as
expected.
Believing we
could resolve
our own
problems, when
we find
ourselves
incapable of
doing so, we
feel depressed.
In today’s
readings we are
advised not to
lose our joy.
That is our do
lots of things
or from our own
triumphs and
victories. It
is from
trusting,
Jesus, who is
coming, and has
the power to
change our
life. He is our
hope and can
truly give us
the strength to
carry on with
our mission in
life. John was
well known and
admired for the
power of this
preaching. He
could have
passed himself
off as the one
the Israelites
were waiting
for, but John
knew well who
he was and
where his
strength was
derived. He was
only a voice
that called out
in the desert
and proclaimed
the coming of
God. He said he
was only a
voice, but he
wasn’t
dissuaded from
carrying out
his
responsibilities.

Tercer domingo

Adviento

|
Quizá
no sea
frecuente, pero
sí es
mposible que a
veces nos
salgan las
cosas tan bien,
que lleguemos a
creernos
pderosos o
importantes.
Pero luego, si
confiamos todo
a nuestras
propias
fuerzas, a
veces nos
frustramos
cuando algo no
va tan bien
como
pensábamos.
Creíamos
que
podíamos
resolver
nuestros
propios
problemas y,
cuando nos
vemos
incapaces, nos
sentimos
decaídos.
En las lecturas
de hoy se nos
aconseja no
perder la
alegría.
Esa es nuestra
vocación
como
cristianos.
Pero nuestra
alegría
no viene de que
podamos hacer
muchas cosas;
no viene de
nuestros
propios
triunfos y
vitorias, sino
de la
convicción
de que quien
viene, es
decir,
Jesús,
es quien tiene
el poder de
cambiar nuestra
vida. Es
Él
nuestra
esperanza y
quien de verdad
nos puede dar
fuerza para
llevar a cabo
nuestra
misión
en la vida.
Juan era bien
conocido y
admirado por la
fuerza de su
predicación.
Podría
haberse hecho
pasar por aquel
a quien
esperaban los
isralitas. Pero
Juan sabe muy
bien
quién es
y de
dónde
esperaban le
viene la
fuerza.
Él
sólo es
la voz que
clama en el
desierto y
anuncia la
llegada de
Dios. Dice
“sólo”
es esa voz,
pero no se
retrae de
hacerlo.

Every year the tabloids publish lists such
as “the most beautiful people in the
world” and “the most
sought-after bachelors.” Other
magzines join the trend of “the
lists” and announce “the
wealthiest” or “the most
powerful people” in the world.
Beauty, money, power, and reputation seem
to be what makes a person be someone in
life. For many people their only goal in
life is to have money, be powerful, and
famous. And if one is ugly? Well, money
can buy a plastic surgery or two to make
us beuatiful!! There are also people who
believe that society owes them much, or
that they must be treated in a special
way, because they are either rich or are
famous because of their business or public
life. Today’s readings are like a
slap in the face, making us wake up from
the dream of wanting to be popular and
famous, from wanting to be more than
others and asking them to give us more
than we deserve. St. John the Baptist
gives us a lesson in humility, so
appropriate during this season of Advent,
when we are preparing to receive God, make
human in the humility of a baby born in a
small village in Israel. To be humble
means to recognize who we are, no more, no
less. Sometimes we confuse being humble
with undervaluting ourselves. Humility
does not mean that I have to say that I am
a bad tailor if I truly sew beautiful
dresses. But humility does not mean that
we claim to be more than we are, that I am
best person fixing cars when the only
thing I can truly do is change the oil.
John the Baptist recognized before all who
he was and Jesus was. Nothing more,
nothing else. Truth and humility go hand
in hand.
Todos los años las revistas de
chismes publican listas de “las
personas más bellas del mundo”
y “los solteros más codiciados
del mundo”. Otras revistas
también se suman a las
“listas” y anuncian las personas
“más ricas” o las
“más poderosas del
mundo”. La belleza, el dinero, el
poder y la fama de Hollywood y de la
política parecen se lo que nos hace
ser alguien en la vida. Para mucha gente
la única meta en su vida es tener
dinero para así tener poder y ser
famoso. ¡Y si uno es feo, con el
dinero también se puede comprar una
o dos cirugías plásticas
para ser atractivo! Los hay también
gente que se cree que la sociedad les debe
mucho o que se les debe tratar de una
forma especial y diferente a los
demás, y todo por tener lo que
tienen, o por la fama que sus negocios o
vida pública les da. Las lecturas
de hoy son como una cachetada para que nos
despertemos de esas ansias de popularidad,
de fama, de querer ser más que los
demás y pedir que se nos de
más de lo que nos corresponde. San
Juan Bautista nos da una lección de
humildad, tan apropiada en este adviento
cuando nos preparamos a recibir a Dios,
hecho hombre en la humildad de un
bebé nacido en un pueblito de
Israel. Ser humilde es reconocer quienes
somos, ni más ni menos. A veces
confundimos la humildad con el
menospreciarnos. La humildad no significa
que tengamos que decir que soy una mala
costurera cuando en verdad hago unos
vestidos bien lindos. Pero la humildad
tampoco quiere decir que digamos que somos
más de lo que en verdad somos, que
yo soy el más hábil
arreglando carros cuando lo más que
se hacer es cambiar el aceite. San Juan
Bautista reconoció ante los
demás quien era él y
quién era Jesús. Ni
más, ni menos. La verdad y la
humildad van de la mano.
