A
reflection on
the Gospel for
The Holy
Family
|
|
It is
common in our
society for
children to
move their
elderly parents
to live in
nursing homes.
Sometimes it is
almost
inevitable
because it is
unfeasible to
care for them
in our own
home. In any
case, the
decision must
be taken from a
standpoint of
love and
respect for our
elderly parents
and beyond what
is convenient
for us. It is a
matter of
justice. The
elderly have
given their
life, efforts
and sacrificed
for the younger
generations. It
is also a
biblical
mandate.
“Even if
your parents
lost their
memory, be
patient.
Respect and
honor them
always.”
It can be one
of the most
difficult
moments in the
life of a
family. But it
can be better,
if throughout
our lifespan we
learned the
lessons
recommended in
today’s
second
readings. Paul
details the
virtues we must
cultivate:
compassion,
kindness,
humility,
gentleness,
patience,
forgiveness...and
above all else,
the best outfit
of all, love
and gratitude.
This reading
presents a good
examination of
consciousness
in regards to
our family
life. When have
we failed to be
compassionate
with one
another, demand
more than we
were willing
give or judged
others harshly?
In what moments
have we taken a
harsher stance
over kinder
ones? When have
we lost our
patience? When
have we wanted
to have the
final say on
everything?
What things
have we not
forgiven or
when have we
been incapable
of asking for
forgiveness? In
what moments
have we
neglected to
express our
gratitude for
the things,
small or large,
others do for
us throughout
the
day?

de la Sagrada
Familia

En
nuestra
sociedad es
algo frecuente
que, cuando los
padres llegan a
una edad
avanzada, los
hijos decidan
llevarlos a una
residencia para
ancianos. A
veces una
decisión
así es
inevitable, por
la
imposibilidad
de proporcionar
a los ancianos
un cuidado
adecuado dentro
de la casa.
Pero, en todo
caso, cualquier
decisión
se debe tomar
tomando en
cuenta primero
el amor y el
respeto debido
a los mayores
por encima de
la propia
comodidad. Es
cuestión
de justicia.
Los ancianos
han dado su
vida, su
esfuerzo y
todos sus
sacrificios por
las
generaciones
más
jóvenes.
Es
también,
un mandato
bíblico.
“Aunque tu
padre pierda la
memoria, ten
paciencia.
Respétalo
y hóralo
siempre.”
Este es uno de
los momentos
más
difíciles
en la vida de
una familia.
Pero se llega
mejor a
él si, a
lo largo de la
vida, se han
aprendido las
lecciones que
se nos
recomiendan hoy
en la segunda
lectura. Pablo
enumera las
virtudes que
hay que
cultivar:
compasión,
bondad,
humildad,
mansedumbre,
paciencia,
perdón...y
sobre todo eso,
el mejor
vestido, el
amor. Y el
agradecimiento.
Esta lectura
puede
represntar un
buen examen de
conciencia
sobre nuestra
vida familiar.
¿Cuándo
no hemos sido
compasivos unos
con otros y nos
hemos exigido
casi más
de lo que
podíamos
dar, o nos
hemos juzgado
unos a otros
duramente?
¿En
qué
momentos hemos
tenido una
actitud
más de
dureza que de
bondad?
¿Cuándo
hemos perdido
la paciencia?
¿En
qué
momentos hemos
querido tener
la
última
palabra sobre
todo?
¿Qué
cosas no hemos
perdonado o en
qué
momentos hemos
sido incapaces
de la grandeza
de pedir
perdón?
¿En
qué
momentos se nos
ha pasado por
alto agradecer
las muchas
cosas,
pequeñas
o grandes, que
durante el
día
hacen los
demás
por
nosotros?

Gift-Giving

Many of
us are struggling in these difficult
times. The practice of gift-giving on
Christmas can compound our worries. Often,
we are compelled to buy so we can give
what we believe are meaningful
gifts.
Instead
of material gifts, why not consider a
different form of gift-giving that can
lift up the spirit rather than weigh it
down? For instance, give the gift of
service at the nursing home or soup
kitchen.
On
December 6th, thirty-eight sick and
elderly people attended the Mass for the
Sick at our parish church and received
anointing. This would not have been
possible without the assistance and care
of family members and
caregivers.
And if
you are thinking of a birthday gift to
Jesus why not go to confession? I told the
confirmation candidates, 40 of them, who
came for the Reconciliation Service on
December 19th that the best gift they can
give to Jesus is their sins. These young
men and women, who hardly listen to a good
advice and teaching, responded
positively.
They
made good and sincere confessions,
expressing sorrow for the bad things they
had done and promising to do their best to
avoid sin again. I was truly touched.
There is hope for our kids. Give Jesus
your sins. Time is such a precious
commodity. It’s so rare. We hardly
have time. This Christmas, give time as a
gift.
Give
time to God in prayer. Spend quality time
with your family, have dinner together,
have fun together or
read a
story to the kids. There are a lot more
ways of giving that are in keeping with
the Christmas spirit and bring about
peace, joy and unity. Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year to all!
Dando
Regalos

Muchos
de nosotros estamos batallando en estos
tiempos tan dificultosos. La practica de
dar regalos en Navidad nos puede precupar
mucho. Muchas veces, compramos regalos
para dar lo que creemos que son regalos
que representan merecidos.
En
lugar de regalos materilista, porque no
consideramos una manera diferente de dar
regalos que nos levantan el espiritu en
lugar de bajarlo. Por ejemplo, dar
servicio a un hospital de ancianos o en
una cocina que dan de comer al
necesitado.
El 6 de
Diciembre, 38 enfermos y ancianos
atendieron la misa de los enfermos en
nuestra parroquia y recivieron el unjir de
enfermos. Esto no hubiera sido possible
sin la ayuda de familiares que los cuidan
o los que cuidan los
ancianos.
¿Y
si esta pensando en un regalo de
cumpleaños para Jesus, por que no
ir a confesion? Yo les dije a los
estudiantes de confirmacion, 40 de ellos
que vinieron para servicio de confesiones
el 18 de Diciembre que es el mejor regalo
que le pueden dar a Jesus, sus pecados.
Estos jovenes hombrecitos y mujercitas,
que casi no escuchan a nadie que les da
consejos o enseñanzas, respondieron
positivamente. Hicieron muy buenas y
sinceras confeciones, expresando tristeza
por las cosas malas que habian hecho y
expresaron de hacer lo mejor de no repetir
sus pecados de nuevo.
El
tiempo es una comodidad muy preciosa. Es
raro que no tenemos tiempo. En esta
Navidad, de su tiempo como un regalo. De
tiempo a Dios con sus oraciones. Dediquen
tiempo a sus familias, coman juntos,
diviertanse juntos, lean un libro a los
niños.
Hay
muchas maneras de dar para estar al dia
con el espiritu Navideño, como dar
paz, alegria y unidad. Feliz Navidad y
Feliz Año Nuevo a
todos!
