Altar Serving

Introduction

Welcome to Altar Serving!

What does it mean to be an altar server?

It means serving God and his people at Mass

Help the priest and the people praise God as well as they can Carry special objects and carry out special actions at Mass. Why does a priest need servers to help him?

Priests should not do everything at mass.

There are other ministers: deacons, readers, acolytes, choir, ushers, etc.

Today servers do some of the tasks the acolytes did in the past: preparing the altar and sanctuary before mass, making responses.

What are acolytes?

Acolytes were young men who were studying to be priests.

Serving at the altar gave them a good chance to learn what they needed to know about the mass.

Are girls allowed to serve?

In the past, altar servers were all boys for only men could become priests. Now, one does not need to study for the priesthood to become altar servers.

1994: altar servers could be girls.

They can do all the tasks that boys have always done.

Ministry of Servers:

Set the pace: What you do and how you do it can help other people understand the Mass better and make their faith in God stronger.

Become very involved in the mass so people become involved also.

The people in the church will be watching you carefully.

It makes a difference how you carry the candles, how you genuflect or bow, what kind of posture you have when sitting or standing or whether you seem prayerful.
